After a Relationship Ends: Daily Life & Unfinished Business

Ending a long relationship can leave you with much to come to terms with. You may feel relieved that certain difficulties are behind you, yet still struggle with disappointment, regret, or questions about what happened. Even when separating was the right decision, the consequences may be harder to live with than you expected.
After years together, much of your lives may remain connected. You may need to negotiate friendships, settle finances, and reconsider familiar routines. If you have children, you must also find ways to cooperate with your former partner, sometimes while significant disagreements and difficult feelings remain unresolved.
The emotional adjustment can be unpredictable. You may enjoy your independence one day and feel unsettled the next by an ordinary reminder of your former life. Missing your children, seeing your former partner move on or facing family occasions separately can be particularly difficult. Questions may remain unanswered, and arrangements may take time to settle, even as you begin building a different life.
